Uganda–DR Congo Frees Over Two Hundred Teenagers from Militant Captivity

(MENAFN) Ugandan and Congolese forces have carried out a joint military operation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo that resulted in the rescue of more than 200 teenagers held by militants linked to the Islamic State, according to official statements.

The rescue reportedly took place during an offensive along the River Epulu, where troops targeted a camp operated by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group active in the region for decades. Authorities said the operation led to the killing of several militants and the seizure of weapons from the site.

Military officials stated that those freed included minors as young as 14, with the oldest rescued being 19. Many of the individuals described experiencing harsh conditions during their captivity, including limited food supplies, forced labor, and punishment for disobedience.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces reported that several of the rescued individuals were found in poor health, suffering from conditions such as malaria, respiratory infections, and severe physical exhaustion, requiring urgent medical attention.

The ADF, which originated in Uganda and later became active in eastern Congo, has been associated with prolonged instability in the region. The group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State several years ago and has since been linked to attacks, kidnappings, and other violent incidents.

The current operation forms part of a wider joint military campaign launched by Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo aimed at countering the ADF presence in the border region. Despite ongoing military efforts over recent years, the group continues to operate in parts of eastern Congo, carrying out periodic attacks on civilians and security forces.
